The title of this book reflects its contents. "The Book Of Hopes And Dreams" is full of the power of hopes and dreams. The poetry within its covers is subversive; reading it may lift your spirits and could possibly infect you with optimism. Exposure to optimism can be dangerous; it is not just delightful, but highly-addictive. In extreme cases addicts will happily run the risk of public ridicule by swimming against the prevailing tide of post-modern, ironic ennui. Their street-credibility decimated, their cool lost forever; you will know these hapless addicts by the upturning of their lips and the twinkle in their eyes. Read this book and you too may stop thinking that everything is awful and nothing can be done about it. Buy this book and you have already begun the process; for you are giving money towards a remarkable cause. You are helping to provide doctors, nurses and medical supplies for the five hundred thousand people who live in isolated villages in the Baglan Province of North East Afghanistan, who until 2002 had gone nearly a quarter century without medical facilities of any kind, who until then had precious few reasons to believe in the power of hopes and dreams.

Thanks to the Glasgow-based charity, Spirit Aid (headed by actor and director, David Hayman), the people of Baglan Province now have at least some limited access to medical facilities. Over the coming years, Spirit Aid hopes to raise enough money to considerably improve this access, by providing and running six mobile clinics, together with a medical team of local doctors, nurses, paediatricians, dentists, pharmacists, drivers and interpreters. It's an ambitious project, but the people at Spirit Aid are rarely defeated by apathy, for they truly believe in the power of hopes and dreams.
