From the Author
Samuel David Luzzatto ("Shadal," 1800-1865), the leading Jewish scholar of 19th-century Italy, translated Genesis and the other Books of Moses into Italian and wrote a fascinating Hebrew-language commentary on them. Here, for the first time, is an all-English version of Shadal's treatment of Genesis--the first complete edition since the 1871 original. What makes the commentary unique is its blend of modernity and tradition: Luzzatto uses "scientific" methods to analyze the meaning of the text, while at the same time defending the traditional views as to the Torah's unity and antiquity. I have added explanatory notes and a list identifying the wide array of source authorities, ancient and modern, cited by Shadal.
