The first edition of this work.'Book of Gems' is an extensive collection of famous British poems by the most prominent and prolific poets in the early nineteenth century.Including poems by Addison, Watts, Johnson, Gray, Pope, Somerville, Cowper, and more.Illustrated with fifty-three vignettes, and four pages to the rear showing facsimile signatures of the authors included in the anthology.Collated, complete.Compiled and edited by Samuel Carter Hall, a Victorian journalist. He is best known for editing 'The Art Journal'. His personality was much satirised, for being sanctimonious. In a full morocco binding. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the spine and extremities, and lighter rubbing to the boards. Minor marks to the boards and spine. Spine is a little faded. Tail of the rear board to the extremity is bumped and detaching. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spotting, and a tide mark to the tail of the text, larger to the first few pages. Good.
