~Early 20th-century rebind in full black morocco, boards framed in double blind fillets, double gilt fillets and gilt lettering to spine. Rubbing to spine and board edges, and minor splash marking to spine. 4to (21.5 x 32.5cm). All edges marbled in Turkish pattern, predating current rebind. Hinges sound. Replacement grey and white marbled endpapers, likely contemporary with binding. Endpapers reinforced with black cloth at gutters. Owner's bookplate printed in red & black to inside front board. Early or original blank front and rear endpapers, front blank endpaper with owner's signature dated 1817. With additional engraved title page, signed 'P. Williamson Scu.', dated MDCLXXXI. 'The Psalter or Psalms of David, after the translation of the Great Bible, .' has separate dated title page; register is continuous. Divisional title page on sig. 2O4r: 'The form and manner of making, ordaining, and consecrating of bishops, priests, and deacons, according to the order of the Church of England' and on sig. 2S1r: 'A form of prayer with thanksgiving, to be used yearly upon the fifth day of November'. Decorative initials, head- and tail-pieces throughout. Text largely printed in black letter. Very minor dampstaining to top of pages at gutter from c. sig. 2D1 onwards, and at base near gutter in metrical psalms from sig. L1r. Repaired tear to leaf C4, and small (3cm) closed tear to leaf T5, both slightly affecting text. Leaves F2 & F3 repaired at edges with laid paper, slightly affecting text on F3v. Kalendar printed in red & black. This was one of the last BCPs to be printed in the reign of Charles II, and many references to the royal family throughout have been altered and annotated in an old hand on multiple occasions to reflect the accessions of William and Mary, Anne, and George I. Bound with 1680 edition of the metrical psalms: 'The Whole Book of Psalms. Collected into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others', with imprint 'Printed by J. M. for the Company of Stationers, MDCLXXX'. As per ESTC, this 'J. M.' was J. Macock. Repaired tear to metrical psalms leaf M1., minor impact on text. Metrical psalms printed largely in black letter, double columns. BCP is ESTC R27758, Griffiths 1683 1. Collated A-C4, D6, E2, F-G4, H-2N6, 2O4, 2P-2Q6, 2R4, 2S6. Metrical psalms are ESTC R175365, collated A-M6, N4. Some, slightly erratic, pagination to metrical psalms, starting at p. 59. A late Carolean edition of the BCP in solid 20th-century binding, annotations reflecting its use through the reigns of the two final Stuart queens, Mary and Anne, and into the reign of George I. ~Robust packaging.
