As of May 8, 2021, 76 years after the end of the 2nd World War, appears by the former Bonn city archivist Manfred van Rey "Bonn in bitter times". The presentation covers different aspects of Bonn's history in the period of National Socialism. The author portrays the Nazis' seizure of power at the local level. He signs Jewish destiny, such as the exclusion of musicians from the Municipal Orchestra, today's Beethoven Orchestra, and the expulsion of professors from Bonn University. Manfred van Rey describes the Aryanization of houses and shops, the destruction of the synagogues, and the deportation of Bonn's Jewish women, men and children to the concentration and extermination camps. In one chapter, he deals with the role of the two Christian churches in the period of National Socialism. If many Bonners and Bonners until the beginning of the 2nd World War had cheered the brown men, so this changed in the course of the war. Even for these Bonners, with the beginning of the Allied bombardment, the years of Nazi rule became a bitter time. In March 1945, US troops took Bonn and Bad Godesberg and, after 12 years, ended the "Millennial Empire" of Adolf Hitler. Manfred van Rey's presentation is based on sources accessible to him as an archivist, and contemporary witnesses come to the word, according to Else Waldmann, the daughter of one of the musicians excluded from the Municipal Orchestra.
