CHAPTER 1
THE BONEHEAD BASICS
WARNING: IF YOU DID NOT READ THE PREFACE, YOU REALLY ARE A BONEHEAD! GO BACK AND READ IT NOW!
Uh-oh! You have concluded that there is no escaping the fact that you will have to be able to interpret EKGs. You can't fake your way through this one — no matter how hard you try or how smart you think you are. It is as compulsory to your career as a triple toe loop is to a competitive figure skater. Where are you going to start? How could you possibly learn what all those squiggly lines mean on that funny-looking graph paper? You might even entertain thoughts of making a quick career change when faced with the reality of being required to interpret EKGs. Surely becoming a rocket scientist would be easier than what you are trying to accomplish. Fortunately, we're here to help you devise a strategy to see you through the process of becoming a first-rate EKG interpreter.
At first glance, EKG interpretation appears to be an overwhelming, not to mention complicated, undertaking. On the surface, most would agree with that assessment. It's also true that the learning process can be almost painless and interesting — but only for those who indulge us, the authors of this book. We provide the map, the strategy, and the process. You need to supply the time, energy, and enthusiasm (and maybe a little trust that we know what we're talking about), and you will achieve the results you desperately need, and desire.
The information and teaching techniques in this book will prove a powerful tool to medical students, interns, residents, physician's assistants, nurses, EMTs, and other paramedical professionals as they begin the career-long journey to EKG reading competency. We speak the truth. It does take time and effort to become a proficient EKG reader, but the time invested in mastering this subject could pay huge dividends. You just might save someone's life someday.
We prefer that you start by reading the book from beginning to end — don't skip around. You will learn much faster this way, because each concept presented is carefully structured and builds on the one preceding it. Please take care to learn and understand each topic before going to the next paragraph. So avoid any temptation to "skim and resume." After completing the entire book, you can then refer back to sections as needed. The chapters have been set up the way they are so that even someone who knows nothing about EKGs can learn. We could teach a high schooler working as a bag boy at the grocery store if he took a notion to read this book in earnest.
The order of presentation is self-evident, so we won't repeat it here. We believe it best to start with what the EKG is supposed to do &
