Item description from seller

Unmarked inside and out. Ships from U.K. 456 pages. 9.33 (H) by 6.34 (W) by 1.46 (T) inches. (474 pages) . Not ex-library. Ships from U.K. This book examines how Philadelphia employers helped each other to combat organized labor. This book examines how a group of manufacturers of metal products in America's third biggest city helped each other to meet the challenges of organized labor (and sometimes an interventionist state) in the half-century between the 'second industrial revolution' and the Second World War. Labor issues are analysed by means of a careful local case-study, but its conclusions about the interplay of labor, organized capital, law, and the state in determining the fate of workers' rights and employers' interests have broad relevance to the history and politics of twentieth-century industrial relations. After thirty years of success, the employers were finally overwhelmed by a resurgent labor movement backed by New Deal politicians and administrators. Their story offers the broadest and most detailed account available of the industrial relations problems and policies of small and mid-sized firms in this period. 1. The iron masters; 2. Laying the foundations: peace and war in the metal trades, c. 1890-1904; 3. Combat, crisis, and consolidation, 1904-1915; 4. 'The largest, strongest, and most valuable association of metal manufacturers in any city'; 5. Riding the storm, 1915-1918; 6. The war after the war, 1918-1923; 7. Pacific passage - a liberal interlude, part 1; 8. Pacific passage - a liberal interlude, part 2; 9. The deluge: the Great Depression and the end of the open shop; 10. Store description

Toby's Books are mainly new or minor shelf wear review copies or new books purchased which (in spite of original optimism) have not been read. Some of the review copies are first edition hard cover and are now difficult to obtain as the bulk of these were sold to libraries. Some books were purchased second hand, some as ex-library stock, but most were purchased second hand with minimal wear and are in surprisingly good condition in spite of twenty or so years on a shelf. Some of my books are only available in the North America - where they were bought on visits to Detroit, Washington, and New York. There is always an element of the subjective in assessments of condition. However, very effort has been made to ensure that the description errs towards the negative rather than the positive. I am able to send photos of any book or journal you may be interested in, as well as other detail. On shipping, I use Abe's default charges which are the lowest. I do not attempt to make a profit on shipping, in fact shipping is often at a loss. Where shipping is considerably above Abe's standard price, my policy is to go halves with the purchaser on the difference. Although Abe gives standard shipping times, please be aware that books to the Southern hemisphere tend to arrive very close to the limit if sent surface.…
