About this Item
G. P. Putnam's sons, New York, 1941. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. No stated edition, no printing history, but likely first edition and very early printing (publication date was April 14, 1941); 8-3/4" tall, 462 numbered pages; one-piece red lightly textured binding, gilt lettering on spine only, author's initials blind stamped in gilt on front board; plain ivory end pages; fore edge is not trimmed. Book may have been read but is still in superb condition: it is square, hinges tight, lower front corner lightly bumped, no dings on edges, head and heel of spine very lightly folded inward; spine not damaged or cracked; faint stain on lower front panel, base of spine and lower rear panel at spine indicate that the book was water damaged, but the damage was superficial and there are no such stains on the interior, (end pages and text pages are clean and are without water stains). The interior is pristine: it is clean and unmarked; no page corners folded or damaged; pages are tight and clean with no writing, stains, or marks of any sort; no staining or discoloration; hinges are tight and undamaged; end pages are very lightly darkened; no distortion of the book from reading or improper shelving. Jacket is in good condition: shallow 2" x 5/8" chip at top of spine does not affect title; small chips at heel of spine; entire jacket is lightly darkened, but spine is very heavily darkened (see photo); water stain mark at base of spine. Jacket in now in mylar cover. Condition of book and jacket consistent with being gently read. No other discernible or objectionable faults on book or jacket such as marks or writing within, stains, tears, chips, or other damage that would diminish its appearance. No remainder mark, no inscriptions, not price clipped, not a former library book. It may be a book club edition, but other than the lack of a price on the jacket, the only evidence for that is a "Book-of The-Month Club Selection" emblem on the bottom of the front panel; however, there is no 'slug' on the rear board that would indicate that it was a book club edition.
