In the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a boy born into darkness must fight to reclaim his soul. This powerful true crime narrative follows Bobby Burris from his traumatic childhood through a life of crime, ultimately toward an unexpected redemption that will leave readers questioning everything they thought they knew about justice, family, and transformation.
Bobby's story begins in the Appalachian wilderness, where his father Robert rules through fear and manipulation, forcing his young son into a world of poaching, violence, and increasingly dangerous criminal enterprises. What starts as innocent hunting expeditions transforms into something far more sinister—a nightmare of abuse and complicity that shapes every decision Bobby makes. Caught between his father's iron grip and his own desperate need for love and approval, Bobby descends into the drug trade, becoming one of western North Carolina's most dangerous criminals.
Yet this is not merely a tale of crime and punishment. Woven throughout are moments of breathtaking beauty—memories of his grandmother's unconditional love, encounters with nature that stir his spirit, and glimpses of the man Bobby might have been. When his carefully constructed empire crumbles and he finds himself behind bars, something unexpected happens. A vision in his prison cell ignites a journey toward understanding, forgiveness, and the possibility of redemption.
Author C.F. Gerwe masterfully weaves together Bobby's haunting past with his present struggle for transformation, painting a vivid portrait of a region where beauty and brutality coexist, where family loyalty can become a weapon, and where even the darkest souls might find light. The narrative captures the complex psychology of a man shaped by trauma, exploring how the sins of the father reverberate through generations and how one person's choice to tell the truth might set them free.
This gripping account challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about abuse, complicity, and the possibility of change, all set against the majestic and mysterious backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains.
