“Blockchain-based Web of Things Security: Advances, Challenges, and Solutions” offers a concise yet comprehensive exploration of how blockchain technologies can enhance the security and trustworthiness of the Web of Things (WoT). It bridges theoretical foundations with applied research to guide academics, engineers, and decision-makers in deploying decentralized security solutions for interconnected environments. Starting with the evolution from IoT to WoT, the book outlines the interoperability and security challenges of integrating billions of devices into the web. It then introduces blockchain as a key enabler of trust, transparency, and resilience, covering its cryptographic principles, consensus models, and smart contract capabilities. The chapters delve into blockchain-based frameworks for WoT security, including decentralized identity management, secure key revocation, and distributed SSO systems. Sector-specific use cases such as intelligent transport and industrial automation demonstrate how blockchain mitigates vulnerabilities and ensures data integrity. The book also explores the synergy between blockchain and emerging technologies like edge computing, AI, and digital twins, with a focus on real-time anomaly detection and threat mitigation. Practical insights, architectural templates, and regulatory perspectives round out this volume, making it a valuable reference for building secure, scalable, and interoperable WoT ecosystems.
Chapters featured include:
Dr. Saad El Jaouhari is currently an Associate Professor at Isep – Engineering School in Paris. He is a member of the Electronics and Communication Systems (ECoS) team within the LISITE laboratory (Laboratoire d'Informatique, Signal et Image, Électronique et Télécommunications). He also serves as the Head of the Cybersecurity Lab, and leads both the engineering cycle and the master’s program in Wireless Telecommunication and IoT Systems. He obtained his Master’s degree in Cryptology and Computer Security from Bordeaux University in 2015. In December 2018, he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from IMT Atlantique, France, where his research focused on the cybersecurity of smart cities and Internet of Things / Web of Things services. Following his Ph.D., he joined IRT b<>com as a postdoctoral researcher in 2019, contributing to the CONDOR-SET project, which aimed to stream operating room videos enriched with metadata. In 2020, he continued his postdoctoral work at Orange Labs, focusing on over-the-air firmware updates for IoT devices. In 2024, he held a temporary position as Director of Research and Innovation at Adservio, where he led the research team, oversaw project planning, and managed the technology intelligence process. His research interests include cybersecurity, the Internet and Web of Things (IoT/WoT), and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). His current work centers on enhancing the security of IoT networks, with a particular emphasis on anomaly detection. This involves investigating semantical and statistical techniques to enable comprehensive analysis of IoT data and network behavior.
Nour El Madhoun is currently an Associate Professor of Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Blockchain and Head of the engineering cycle Digital Security and Networks at Isep – Engineering School in Paris, a position she has held since May 2022. She is also an Associate Researcher at Sorbonne Université/LIP6, where she was part of the PHARE team from 2020 to 2022 and has been a member of the NPA team since November 2022. In addition, she is affiliated as an Associate Researcher with Université Paris-Saclay/LISN in the ROCS team. She received her Master’s degree in Networks/Computer Science from Sorbonne Université/Télécom ParisTech in 2014 and her Ph.D. degree in Cybersecurity/Computer Science from Sorbonne Université in 2018. At Sorbonne Université, she served as an ATER in 2017. In 2018, she gained industry experience as a post-doctoral researcher at Orange Labs, working on blockchain and smart contract technologies. From 2019 to 2020, she joined Isep – Engineering School in Paris as an Associate Professor of Cybersecurity and Blockchain, while also overseeing the engineering cycle Digital Security and Networks. From 2020 to 2022, she served as an Associate Professor of Cybersecurity and Blockchain at EPITA – Engineering School in Paris. Her current research focuses on network security, cryptographic protocols, EMV payment systems, NFC technology, blockchain and smart contract technologies, and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for cybersecurity. She has co-edited the following four Springer books: Emerging Trends in Cybersecurity Applications (with Kevin Daimi, Abeer Alsadoon, Cathryn Peoples), Principles and Practice of Blockchains (with Kevin Daimi, Ioanna Dionysiou), Building Cybersecurity Applications with Blockchain and Smart Contracts (with Ioanna Dionysiou, Emmanuel Bertin), Blockchain and Smart Contract Technologies for Innovative Applications (with Ioanna Dionysiou, Emmanuel Bertin).
