1843. Third edition. viii, 85pp. plus a 3-page catalogue, folding plan of Edinburgh and a folding map of the environs, 12 plates (including the frontispiece), and 6 illustrations in the text. Black's Guides were travel guide books published by the Adam and Charles Black firm of Edinburgh (later London) beginning in 1839. The series' style tended towards the "colloquial, with fewer cultural pretensions" than its leading competitor Baedeker Guides. This small volume is devoted to Edinburgh and the surrounding area, and takes the form of a series of four walks through Edinburgh followed by a description of the environs. The book is bound in the original stiff card covers with black titling on the spine and front cover and a list of other works on the rear cover. The book is in very good condition with expected shelf wear and some soiling to the covers. The corners are worn with a little loss to the tips of the front corners and the spine ends. The bottom 2 3/4" of the spine has a fairly recent repair using strips of document repair tape that cover the spine and part of the spine edge of the covers. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and a little scattered light foxing. The plan of Edinburgh is attached to the inside of the front cover and has some damage and a little loss the bottom 4" of the right-hand edge that has split from the cover. The rear free endpaper has some pencil notes and a name and address has been neatly written on the front free endpaper.…
