What does it take for a nation to develop one of the world's most sophisticated main battle tanks-and turn that achievement into an international defence programme? Behind the armour lies a remarkable story of engineering ambition, military requirements, industrial challenges, and the changing demands of modern warfare.
K2 Black Panther by Stephen Rowen takes readers inside South Korea's modern main battle tank, tracing its evolution from the K1 programme to the advanced K2 and its growing role in European defence through Poland.
Developed for the demanding terrain and strategic realities of the Korean Peninsula, the Black Panther combines a powerful 120 mm gun, automatic loading, advanced fire control, adjustable suspension, and digital battlefield systems. Every major design decision reveals how South Korea sought to combine firepower, mobility, protection, and technological independence.
Inside this volume, discover:
- From K1 to K2: How South Korea developed its own armoured technology, overcame production challenges, and established a modern tank-building industry.
- Engineering the Black Panther: The three-man crew, autoloader, sophisticated targeting systems, experimental KSTAM ammunition, adjustable suspension, armour, and protection technologies.
- The Tank in Military Service: How Korean crews train, how the K2 operates within combined-arms formations, and the maintenance, recovery, and logistical systems required to sustain it.
- Poland and the International Expansion: The K2GF, the planned K2PL, industrial cooperation, technology transfer, modernization, and South Korea's emergence as a major armoured-vehicle exporter.
Drawing on historical research, technical documentation, procurement records, and operational evidence, Stephen Rowen connects the tank's engineering with the military and industrial decisions that shaped its development.
Readers will gain a deeper understanding of how contemporary main battle tanks are conceived, built, operated, supported, and adapted-and how the Black Panther reflects a new chapter in global armoured warfare.
Discover the engineering, strategy, and industrial achievement behind South Korea's K2 Black Panther.
