About this Item
12mo. Pp. 160. Red-orange cloth, titles stamped in black on the spine, printed in Holland: board edges rubbed, light soiling to the head edge. In the color illustrated dust jacket with price 4/6 intact on the front flap: spine sunned and ends chipped, front hinge partially split, edges with crimps and short closed tears, cello tape reinforcements. The tenth humorous murder mystery from sisters Constance and Gwenyth, with an uncredited surrealist cover illustration. The Australian sisters had a lengthy run as mystery writers mostly in their adopted home of Newton, NJ. Other than their debut novel (1938), "Black" was used in subsequent titles. (Their English publisher employed the pen-name portmanteau "Conyth.") Unlike many mystery novels of Golden Age Detection, their sleuths, whether a ballerina, a nurse, an heiresses, et al., are always female; the male protagonists serve as mere foils. Moreover, wacky, screwball plots prevail, fulfilling the publisher's promise of "homicide and humor." HUBIN, p. 216. Jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve. Seller Inventory # 8269
