A clear, readable study of Butler’s moral philosophy
The book surveys Bishop Butler’s thoughts on virtue, moral government, and the Analogy, highlighting how his ideas shaped English moral and religious thought. It explains Butler’s method, his view of virtue and happiness, and how future life relates to present conduct, with context drawn from Butler’s writings and key critics. This edition distills complex ideas into accessible analysis, helping readers understand Butler’s argument for a moral order in nature and the promise of a more complete government of virtue in the afterlife. It traces the book’s influence through later discussions of conscience, duty, and the role of suffering in moral growth, while noting how Butler’s impersonal style shaped its enduring authority.
- Clear explanations of Butler’s arguments about virtue, happiness, and divine moral governance
- Discussion of the Analogy and its place in eighteenth‑century religious thought
- Historical context and how Butler influenced later ethics and philosophy
- Biographical notes that illuminate Butler’s life and writing approach
