- Political Theory and History
Birth of the Republican Party, with a Brief History of the Important Part Taken by the Original Republican Association of the National Capital offers a documentary look at the formation and early actions of a political movement in America.
Through an address and accompanying documents, the book situates the rise of the Republican Association and the Wide-Awakes within the heated tensions of the 1850s and 1860s. It highlights campaigning, clashes, and the personalities involved, providing direct evidence from that era.
This edition compiles first-hand reports, procedural details, and the fallout from political conflict, including eyewitness accounts of demonstrations, proposed settlements, and the legal consequences that followed. It also preserves lists of association members and notes on how this movement shaped national events during a pivotal period.- Learn how early party organizing unfolded around Washington, D.C., and how supporters rallied for their candidates.
- See how mobs and counter-movements were described, challenged, and addressed in legal and public forums.
- Explore the written record of apologies, discipline, and resolutions tied to a turbulent political moment.
- Review primary materials that illuminate the people and groups at the center of these debates.
