From the Author
The central theme of my book is that 'the star' played a crucial role in the life of Christ and in the foundations of Christianity. My book has one feature that makes it unique from all other books that have been written on the subject. This is that this particular astronomical event did not coincide, just by accident, with the birth of a man of exceptional qualities, who, because of the revelation of the magi, was led to found the Christian faith. I propose that the magi-astrologers made certain discoveries linking the personalities of individuals with the state of the solar system at their time of birth. In other words my own approach to the subject is based on a causal scientific theory which is able to explain statistical evidence that underpins some very limited aspects of astrology. This theory has three links. First there is the way in which particular planetary alignments can, through a process I call MAGNETO-TIDAL RESONANCE, trigger violent events on the Sun, such as flares and sunspots (see paper by Seymour, Willmott and Turner, Vistas in Astronomy, 1992, 35, 39-71). The second link in the chain is the way in which solar activity affects the magnetic field of earth via the solar wind. The third is the way in which the magnetism of earth interacts with our biological clocks and nervous systems(see THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF ASTROLOGY - Percy Seymour -Foulsham 1997). My theory of astrology has allowed me to re-assess the origins of astrology, and I use this re-assessment to show that one particular theory for 'the star' is far more likely that all the others.
