A significant primary source for late-19th-century North American biogeography. Rather than a synthesized scientific manual, it reads as a compilation of firsthand field notes tracking bird habits, calls, and seasonal changes. It documents multiple expeditions undertaken by Stearns between 1875 and 1882, heavily tracking bird populations within a 60-mile radius of Bonne Esperance up to St. Lewis Sound. Environmental researchers value it for establishing baseline data on avian distribution and behaviors prior to the severe impacts of 20th-century climate shifts and industrial development in the subarctic. Extremely scarce original edition. Ex-library.
