The animals of the forest prepare for the winter season in this classic Caldecott Medal-winning picture book by husband-and-wife duo Berta and Elmer Hader. When the geese migrate south, the woodland animals know it's time to get ready for winter. Rabbits and deer grow thick warm coats. Chipmunks build up stores of seeds and nuts in their homes to munch on all winter long. Skunks and pheasants don't need to change anything. Raccoons get ready to sleep until it's warm again. The wise owls see a rainbow around the moon and warn the others of a big snow on the way. What will the animals do when the storm disrupts their winter routine.

It might have been hard for the birds and animals of the hillside to survive when the Big Snow came if their good friends, who lived in the little stone house, had not remembered to put food out for them.
Here, in many beautiful pictures, the Haders show how winter comes to the woodland as the busy animals make their preparations.
