Add to basketIn the wake of the 1976 Kentucky Derby, Army Specialist Desi McKoy finds himself balancing his role as a photojournalist for the Fort Knox weekly newspaper with a personal quest for his own version of the "Pursuit of Happiness." This pivotal year marks the 200th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a time for reflection on how far America has come—and how far it still has to go.
As Desi embarks on his journey, he encounters a diverse cast of characters: Emily, a recent University of Kentucky graduate grappling with her sense of independence; hitchhiking musicians eager to join a protest in Philadelphia; and Penny Bright, a spirited member of the United States Army band stationed at Fort Knox.
On the Fourth of July, Desi attends a breakfast event in Washington D.C. hosted by Emily’s father, where he senses the complicated feelings swirling around the celebration. While Emily questions her own independence, Desi is determined to capture the spirit of “We the People” during this historic Bicentennial. He must also figure out where he’ll spend the night if he reaches New York City that day.
Through their experiences, Desi and his companions learn that true Patriots are those who actively contribute to the Nation's potential—not merely as passive observers but as hopeful visionaries fostering a sanctuary for the aspirations of all its citizens—while finding their own paths to fulfillment.
Whether you remember the Bicentennial firsthand or are discovering it anew, join Army Specialist Desi McKoy on a journey through this moment of national reflection, celebration, and discovery. Experience a time when millions came together to honor the past while dreaming of a better future.
