Beyond the Title doesn't answer that question with theory. It answers it with a life - a childhood shaped by two radically different parents, a family of six siblings learning to lead each other without anyone calling it that; classrooms that either lit a fire or quietly put one out; a first job in banking under a boss who ran his office on charisma and a violin; decades spent auditing industrial plants and environmental compliance, where the real test of a system is what happens the moment the supervisor walks away; and a lifelong place inside Freemasonry, where the hardest work is never against other people, but against your own ego.
Organized in five parts - The Roots of Leadership, The Internal Construction of the Leader, The Human Science Behind Influence, Leadership Put to the Test, and The Legacy of Leadership - the book moves from where leadership actually begins (long before any promotion) to what a person is made of when no one is auditing them, to the mechanics of trust, language, and emotional contagion that determine whether a team follows out of fear or out of conviction. It doesn't flinch from the author's own worst moments - the night an authorized decision went wrong, the afternoon his own frustration landed on someone who didn't deserve it - because leadership, this book insists, is measured not by the absence of mistakes but by what you do after them.
Each chapter closes with pointed, personal questions - not rhetorical ones, but the kind meant to be sat with: Who was your "Lazo Professor"? What compliance gap exists in your own life today? If power only reveals what you already are, what would it reveal about you right now?
Written by someone who has been, in his own words, "Danton for some people, and for others, the leader whose frustration boiled over at the worst moment," Beyond the Title refuses the comfortable myth that leadership is a fixed identity you either have or don't. It's a practice - assembled in silence, in family kitchens, on night shifts, in the quiet discipline of showing up the same way whether or not anyone is watching.
For readers of leadership books who are tired of frameworks and ready for something that reads like a life - this is a book about the difference between occupying a position and actually deserving to be followed.
What kind of memory are you leaving in the people around you? This book won't let you look away from the question.
