Add to basketWhy does someone pursue a career in teaching? Some may believe that it is because of summer vacations, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Breaks, all the Monday holidays that make for short work weeks, the “easy” hours, and the “great” pay and benefits. Not so. Some believe that it is easy to stand in front of a group of young people and motivate them to reach down and grab onto as much knowledge as they can to help them become the best that they can be. Not so. Some teach because they have a field of interest that they were inspired to learn and want to share that with young people. Maybe, but there is much more than the Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic that makes up a teacher, and the rewards don’t always come in money or benefits. This compilation of stories takes Education, and the life of educators, far beyond the scope and realm of the 3 “R”s.
J. Paul Lombardo is a former Elementary and Middle School teacher having spent two years as a substitute teacher before serving thirty-one years in his own classroom, and after retirement in 2008, has resumed his experiences in the classroom serving, once again, as a substitute teacher. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees from the State University of New York at Fredonia and is a certified High School Baseball and Football Coach, along with being a certified New York State High School Baseball Umpire. Mr. Lombardo has authored and published two books, A Toast...to Every Man’s Son...and His Father (Xlibris Publishers; Copyright 2009) and A Guide to Teaching Baseball (and Life) (Self Published; Copyright 2010). He has also been published in the Early Years Educational Magazine, and the American Baseball Coaches’ Digest. He has served as a columnist for the Jamestown, NY Post Journal since 2009. He has coached scholastic Football, Baseball, and Softball, along with youth and travel baseball, and/or officiated at all levels of baseball (from youth league to college) for over 45 years. He has been happily married since 1980 to the former Sally Hamilton, and is the father of two daughters (Chasity and Christina) and a son (Jonathan.)
