Become the best at what you do, and success will follow.I believed that for most of my life. After years working in maintenance, operations, property management, leadership, investing, and business ownership, I discovered something that challenged everything I thought I knew. The most competent people are not always the most successful. The technician who solves every emergency often works for someone who cannot repair what they can. The employee everyone depends on is not always the one building wealth. The smartest person in the room is often trapped by the very competence that made them valuable. This book explores why. Beyond Competence is not about working less or lowering your standards. It is about understanding that competence is only the beginning. Success is built on far more than technical skill. The marketplace rewards leadership, communication, ownership, leverage, systems, relationships, judgment, and the ability to create value that extends beyond your own effort. Drawing from real experiences in maintenance, emergency repairs, apartment operations, leadership, business ownership, and property investing, I share the lessons that transformed the way I think about work, business, and life. From flooded parking garages and complex building failures to leading teams and building businesses, each chapter reveals practical principles that apply far beyond the maintenance industry. Inside you'll discover: - Why business is not a meritocracy based solely on skill.- The difference between competence and leverage.- Why experts often become trapped by being indispensable.- How leadership differs from technical expertise.- Why communication and trust often matter as much as intelligence.- How systems create freedom while dependence creates limitations.- Why hard work alone is no longer enough in today's economy.- How to develop the mindset of an owner instead of simply an employee.- Practical lessons on leadership, operations, business, investing, and long-term success.- Reflection questions at the end of every chapter to help you apply each lesson to your own career and life. This book is for technicians, tradespeople, managers, operators, entrepreneurs, business owners, students, and anyone who has ever wondered why working harder doesn't always lead to greater success. If you've ever felt overlooked despite your ability. If you've become the person everyone depends on.If you're ready to move beyond simply solving problems and start building something that lasts. This book is for you. Competence will open the door.Leverage will expand your opportunities.Leadership will multiply your impact.Legacy will ensure your work continues long after you're gone.Because competence was never meant to be the destination. It was always meant to be the foundation.
