Print on Demand. This book offers a delightful and accessible collection of jokes and stories, many dating back centuries. The author has traced them to their origins, revealing the tradition of storytelling in an era when humor served as social commentary. Many of these tales were created by monks who saw making people laugh as a virtue equal to prayer, so throughout this entertaining compendium, readers are treated to a variety of stories — some familiar, some obscure — for every occasion. Arranged by theme, they cover everything from puns and roistering tales of monks, soldiers, and sailors, to anecdotes about Irishmen, Scotsmen, and Jews. The stories are complemented by poems and verses, often with a bawdy and satirical twist. Not only a rich source of humor, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the social history of the past, showing us what made people laugh over the course of several centuries. And the universality of the humor ensures you will find yourself laughing along too. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

MY merry masters! First let me say that I make no excuse for publishing this book, for verily a book of humour wants no apologia in these days of general curtailment, and it is because I fear the Shortage of humour that I hasten to help the world to laughter.
You will say - and I heartily agree with you - that it is as dangerous to put Old jokes in new books as new wine in Old bottles, and yet when I contend that there is nothing new under the sun you will dismiss your criticisms and laugh again at the story you heard your father tell your mother when some decades ago you were at her knee.
