Betta splendens is one of the most widely sold aquarium animals in the world, and one of the most poorly kept. The reason is a single misunderstanding: because this fish breathes atmospheric air, it survives conditions that would kill almost anything else, and an industry built a marketing story on that fact and sold the animal in cups. Tolerance is not preference. Survival is not welfare.
Written by a naturalist and biologist with two decades of fieldwork and professional experience in the aquarium trade, this guide sets out what the scientific literature actually says about keeping this species, and says plainly where the evidence runs out.
Inside you will find:
- What two independent 2024 behavioural studies measured about tank size and enrichment, and what they did not establish
- How much space one betta really needs, and why tank shape matters as much as volume
- Building and cycling an aquarium that stays stable, with the nitrogen cycle explained in full
- Feeding a small carnivore properly, and why the pellet-counting rules you have read are guesswork
- Behaviour, flaring, bubble nests and what they do and do not tell you
- Tank mates, shrimp, snails and female groups, with the honest failure rates
- A health chapter built on diagnosing the situation rather than the symptom
- Breeding from pair introduction to free-swimming fry, including what happens to fifty juvenile males
- Colours, fin types and what genome-wide studies revealed about a thousand years of domestication
- Twelve persistent myths, examined one by one
- A quick reference care sheet for the wall beside the tank
Every scientific claim is sourced. Every practical recommendation is labelled as one. If you want to know why your betta behaves the way it does, start here.
