In 1973, the 31-year-old Peter Handke, who had caused great sensation with his theatre pieces and the books Die Angst des Tormanns beim Penalty und Wunschloses Unglück für großen Aufsehen had in der Süddeutsche Zeitung eine »Invitation to Read Hermann Lenz«, in which he recommends the books of the almost 30 years older author to read abundantly. He empempempempempempwhen reading the Lenzsche books happiness. Handke makes contact with the writer hardly known to a larger public: "I am sure to adore you and your quiet, reliable way of foresight."
This results in an intense, over 25 years of correspondence lasting up to Lenz's death - the document of a friendship. As different as the two authors may be in naturell, writing ideas and self-understanding, the almost 300 letters of the "side outside" reveal an unbreakable connection from desk to desk.
As readers, we gain insight into the creation process of their books - Hermann Lenz works on his auto-biographical Eugene rap novels, Peter Handke emerges with new books almost every year - and into their living circumstances. They share the difficulties they have with the "reality people" and the love of walking outdoors, landscapes, nature. In May 1981, Handke writes: "Here is a wonderful day, and I sat almost only outside trying to be his rapporteur." In Hermann Lenz he has found a familiar.
