Beneath every town, behind every mirror, inside every mind - something stirs.
Beneath the Surface gathers six chilling tales where the familiar unravels and the line between the living and the unreal dissolves. Each story peers into a different darkness - of place, of perception, of self - revealing what happens when the truth buried beneath begins to rise.
Whisper's End
A mysterious town draped in fog hides secrets that only the brave dare uncover, where the walls between the living and the dead grow disturbingly thin.
Hollow Bend
In a quiet English village, an ancient force stirs beneath the soil, its creeping power unravelling the lives of those who dare to disturb it.
The Paper Men
A series of strange, haunting pages begin to rewrite lives and memories, leaving those affected with nothing but fragments of their own identities.
The Reflection Room
After the loss of her child, Claire seeks peace in therapy - but the mirror in her therapist's room begins to smile when she does not, reflecting a version of her that isn't quite human.
The Marionette House
A family's dream home learns their every movement, turning affection to control. In its rooms, the furniture listens - and the house itself begins to live through them.
The Observation Tower
At a lonely observatory in the Cumbrian hills, an astronomer discovers a star that should not exist. Each night it draws closer, until she realises the act of watching has become mutual.
From fog-shrouded towns to sentient houses and stars that see, Beneath the Surface explores the unseen connections between place, perception, and identity.
The deeper you look, the more the world looks back.
A. R. Hurst is an independent author of horror, crime, and psychological thrillers, with a passion for exploring the darkest corners of the human mind. Whether it is a tale steeped in terror, a crime that refuses to stay buried, or a thriller where every page twists the knife, Hurst's work always circles back to the psychology of fear, guilt, and obsession.
A firm believer that a good setting sets the pace for a story, Hurst crafts worlds where atmosphere and place are as alive as the characters themselves. Each setting becomes a silent witness or an accomplice to the secrets, betrayals, and revelations that drive the narrative forward.
Drawn to writing from an early age, Hurst found a home in dark fiction, the kind of stories that linger after the lights go out and challenge readers to question what they would do under impossible circumstances. Influenced by both classic horror and contemporary psychological thrillers, Hurst blends atmosphere, tension, and character-driven storytelling to create narratives that feel as unsettling as they are compelling.
When not writing, Hurst is usually reading widely across genres, dissecting films for their storytelling craft, playing tennis, or diving deep into the immersive worlds of RPG games. Always chasing stories in books, on screen, or in gameplay, Hurst draws inspiration from the spaces where imagination and reality collide. Living by the belief that the scariest monsters are often human, Hurst continues to craft stories that hold up a mirror to the choices we make and the consequences we cannot escape.
