Print on Demand. This book explores the history and nature of the complex concept of 'being', also known as 'existence', through an analysis of Being in its most universal sense. The book argues that Being as a concept has both unity and commonness, proposing that Being is a one and only common denominator across all things. It explores the relationship of Being to its modes, identifying four primary ways Being manifests: self-existent, existing from another, existing in itself, and existing in another. The text draws on prior scholastic thought on this subject, particularly the work of St. Thomas Aquinas, extending those ideas with new insights and analysis. The book illuminates the profound depth of meaning of 'Being' or 'existence' in language that is clear and accessible. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Logic
This edition surveys the core idea that being is understood in three related ways: as a universal concept, as it applies to God and to creatures, and as it shapes how we talk about substance and accidents. It explains why predicates about God and creation are taken analogically, not identically, and how that distinction prevents easy generalizations.
You’ll see how metaphysical and logical distinctions organize our concepts, and why “analogical being” helps avoid pitfalls when comparing the Infinite with finite existence. The text also introduces the notion of metaphysical grades—the essential attributes that distinguish one finite being from another—and contrasts them with logical and physical composition of ideas.
- Learn the difference between analogical, univocal, and proper usage of the word being.
- Understand how metaphysical grades and composition influence how we form precise concepts.
- See examples that illustrate metaphysical versus logical composition and why precision matters.
- Discover why the notion of being is central to both philosophy and theology.
Ideal for readers interested in metaphysics, theology, and the philosophy of language, this book provides a careful map of how we talk about existence across different beings.
