Item description from seller

Cover shows signs of having been wet (see photo). No library markings. Pages are clean and tight. Frontispiece of the author with tissue guard. Moore (1837-1906) was considered the "father of American atheism." In February of 1899 he was convicted of mailing obscene materials and on his own suggestion was sent to the Ohio State Penitentiary instead of receiving a monetary fine. President Wm. McKinley commuted his sentence to six months with one month off for good behavior. Charles Chilton Moore was an advocate of prohibition and women's suffrage and a "free thinker." The book was not only mostly written whilst he was in prison but is considered "one of the 10 best books written in prison." We have never seen the book in other than modern reprints and is somewhere between Scarce and Rare. 31498 is apparently his prisoner number.
