- Book 1 of 1: Architect Knowhow Professional Practice Series
A successful architectural project does not begin with an architect’s design drawing.
It begins with clarity.
Before the design begins, this practical guide examines the early stage of an architectural commission, before the design work formally gets underway. Its focus is on the two important matters that determine what comes next: the Project Brief and the Architect’s Appointment.
Before an architect can design sensibly, the client’s needs have to be understood, tested, and shaped into a proper brief. That means defining the scope of services, linking the fee to the work, and making the deliverables clear. Assumptions, exclusions, risks, and responsibilities should all be recorded, so the Architect’s Appointment reflects what has actually been agreed.
When this early process is rushed, taken for granted, or left vague, the project may continue, but its foundations already contain uncertainty. Later, that uncertainty may surface as scope creep and drift, abortive work, disagreements over fees, misunderstandings, complaints, or a breakdown in the professional relationship.
This book explains why those problems often happen before design begins.
Written by Dr. William Hogan-O’Neill, a UK Chartered Architect, author, and specialist in professional practice with more than four decades in architecture, Before the Design Begins offers readers a clear view of the judgement, discipline, and professional thinking needed when a commission begins.
For emerging architects, newly qualified architects, and practitioners in need of a sanity check, this book matters particularly because the early professional structure of a project can remain hidden behind its visible design work. New architects to professional practice may attend meetings, prepare drawings, respond to client comments, develop options or record information without yet having a clear understanding of the appointment, the scope of services, the fee basis or the boundaries of the architect’s role.
That is where inexperienced architects may be vulnerable—not because they lack design ability, but because they have not yet learned how professional clarity protects the client, the project, and the practice.
This book gives emerging and newly qualified architects a clearer sense of what needs settling before a project moves too far into design. A client’s opening statement is seldom the whole story. Comments from stakeholders may not amount to instructions from the client, and a room schedule is not necessarily an agreed brief. The fee should match the service being provided, while written records help keep decisions clear.
For architects already in practice, the book serves as a pointed reminder: the early stages of a commission warrant the same professional attention as the design work that comes later.
First-time clients, meanwhile, are shown why architects need to ask careful questions, challenge assumptions, and set out a clear professional agreement before the project advances too far.
Before the design begins, there is more to consider than the design itself. This is not a design manual; it is a guide to the professional foundations that support responsible design.
Get those foundations right, and better projects follow.
