Before and Beyond the Image: Aniconic Symbolism in Buddhist Art by Dietrich Seckel explores the early development of symbolic representation in Buddhist visual culture prior to the widespread depiction of the Buddha in human form. Drawing on a range of archaeological and art historical evidence, Seckel examines key motifs such as the empty throne, Bodhi tree, and footprints, situating them within their religious and cultural contexts. Published in the respected Artibus Asiae series, this scholarly work remains an important contribution to the study of Buddhist art and iconography, appealing to researchers, collectors, and students of Asian art history.
