From the Inside Flap
Beamont, DSO*, DFC*, DFC (USA), C de G (Belge), DL, FRAeS, one of this country s best Fighter
Leaders during the Second World War. Early in the war Beamont was serving as a pilot flying Hurricanes
in 87 Squadron as a component of the British Expeditionary Force. He was 19 years old.
After flying throughout the Battle of Britain in 1940 he was attached to Hawker Aircraft Ltd as a test pilot.
In 1942 he took command of 609 (West Riding) Squadron which was then re-equipping with the new
Hawker Typhoon and in 1944 he was promoted Wing Commander to command 150 Wing, then forming to
fly the new Hawker Tempest fighter which the wing used to defend London against the V1 cruise missiles
using methods devised and executed by Beamont himself. Following the V1 campaign Beamont formed 122
Wing, flying Tempests, which he took to Europe supporting the Allied ground troops. Given his outstanding
record he was an extraordinarily modest man and led by example, which is always the best.
In October 1944, 3 days after returning from weekend leave in Holland with his wife Shirley and baby
daughter Carol he was shot down by ground fire over Germany, spending seven months in prison camps
before release by the Russians. He was repatriated to England to find that his wife had died in hospital two
weeks before.
After the war he met Patricia Raworth at a tennis party and before long they were engaged and married.
They spent over 54 very happy years together with their family until Pat s death came as a sudden shock.
Throughout a spectacular flying career, in war and peace, Beamont kept the ability to deal skilfully, coolly
and rationally with hazardous situations, winning the warm allegiance of those who served with and under
him. He became a legend in his own lifetime.

Since then, we've grown into to a global company pioneering the circular economy. Today, we drive the circular economy through three re-commerce brands: - Wob: Through Wob, we sell. We provide affordable, preloved books and media to customers all over the world. A book leaves our collection of over seven million titles and begins a new chapter every two seconds, enabling more goods to be reused. - Ziffit: Through Ziffit, we buy. We give people around the world the opportunity to contribute to the circular economy, earn money and protect the planet, by trading their unwanted books and media. - Shopiago: Through Shopiago, we help others. By sharing the technology that has grown World of Books Group into the business it is today, we’re helping charities increase revenue and reduce waste through re-commerce.…
