Power no longer arrives with a knock on the door.
It arrives as an update.
A Bed of Red Roses is a noir novel about a world where people are not destroyed, arrested, or silenced—they are reclassified. Accounts are marked inactive. Access is restricted. Decisions are delayed “for review.” Nothing illegal happens. Nothing dramatic happens. And yet lives begin to thin, narrow, and quietly collapse.
The novel follows two converging realities.
In one, a civilian woman named Mara begins to notice that ordinary systems no longer behave the way they should. Her bus never arrives. Her rent portal deactivates itself. Her insurance, her phone, her building access, and eventually her job all begin to treat her as a contradiction rather than a person. No one accuses her of anything. No one explains what she did wrong. The world simply starts moving around her, politely, efficiently, without resistance.
In the other reality, operators and fixers navigate the space between old power and new. Criminal violence still exists, but it is no longer the most effective tool. The real authority now belongs to systems that never threaten, never rage, and never admit they are choosing anything at all. They process. They optimize. They classify. They remove people without ever touching them.
Between these worlds stands a single fault line: time.
Modern power depends on momentum—on people correcting themselves, complying quickly, and moving on schedule. What the system cannot tolerate is not rebellion, but delay. Not protest, but hesitation. When someone pauses without explanation, when they wait instead of resolving, the machinery begins to strain. Reviews multiply. Responsibility blurs. Inevitability becomes visible—and visibility is dangerous.
Told in a sharp, pulp-noir voice that blends crime, intimacy, dark humor, and philosophical urgency, A Bed of Red Roses moves between personal erosion and institutional calm, between love and leverage, between violence that announces itself and power that insists it is neutral.
This is not a story about heroes overthrowing a system.
It is a story about what happens when people stop helping the system pretend it is inevitable.
About the unpaid labor of compliance.
About how continuity becomes a weapon.
About how the smallest act left to an individual—waiting—can force power to reveal itself.
Nothing explodes.
Nothing resolves cleanly.
And that is the point.
Because the most dangerous systems are the ones that never admit they are doing harm—only that they are “processing.”
A Bed of Red Roses is the first novel in the Terms and Conditions series, a sequence of standalone stories exploring modern power, quiet erasure, and the cost of remaining human inside machines designed to move without stopping.
