Item description from seller

Large octavo. 103 p., 13 photomechanical color plates. Arthur Twidle (1865-1936) is best known as the illustrator for Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" books, among many others. Twidle writes, "[This] book is specially designed to meet the requirements of the home collector of foreign species who wishes to take up this subject for recreation and amusement." It appears, in fact, that Twidle never did any tropical collecting at all, instead acquiring his specimens from commercial sources, using the tales of their capture to inspire his sometimes fanciful illustrations of collectors and their quarry in exotic locales. Species are discussed in five tropical regions: India, Africa & Madagascar, The Amazon & Central America, Malay Archipelago, and New Guinea & Isles of the Coral Sea, while the final chapter is "a list of species for a cabinet of ten drawers geographically arranged. Very Good condition. Internally clean and unmarked, color plates fine. Top right corner of cover and text bent (as if dropped on the corner), protective caption sheets of plates acid burned opposite the card stock on which the smaller color plates are mounted; small marginal nick out of one caption sheet. Binding loose for several central signatures, but not separated. Owner's name and provenance penciled inside front cover. Hardcover. Publisher's brown cloth binding, printed titles and swallowtail butterfly illustration on cover and spine, ruled borders printed on cover.

Store description

Entomological Reprint Specialists (or ERS) was founded as a publisher and mailorder bookselling business in 1968. We started by reprinting out-of-print titles that still had a high demand because of their current utility. Soon, however, we diversified by becoming (at one time) the world's largest mailorder seller offering only books on insects and related arthropods. We continue to be one of the largest distributors for the Moths of North America series, but other sales are now limited to stock on hand and used or antiquarian items that come into our possession.

Specialty

primarily insects and related arthropods; miscellaneous used and antiquarian titles
