Number of Volumes: 2 Two volumes. Full calf bindings with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine, and gilt board-edges (simple dentelles). Leather is damaged at the corners, and cracked at the connections to the spine. Leather generally has the patina of age, with a little scuffing and some cracking vertically along the spine. Bookplate of Erastus Fitch Brown with other ownership information on pastedowns of both volumes, including stamps of "G.N." Pages are in good condition, with foxing but without marginalia. These volumes are compilations of writing gleaned from newspapers, mostly as essays about ideas, manners, and social issues. Volume I includes selections on abstinence, adulterers, anxieties, beauty, blindness, conjugal affections, dancing, death, dueling and much more. Volume II contains selections on envy, fame, future state, gaming, grief, happiness, humor, inconstancy, justice, labor modesty, passion, self-denial, time, and much more. It is predominantly prose, although there are some verse pieces, including verse quoted in prose. Hardcover, good condition. Volume I: 346, volume II: 336 pages, 16mo.
