“Anger may be the most dangerous of human emotions. It is as if the simple spark of fear, or disappointed expectations, ignites a pile of kindling in the soul and sets it ablaze to bring every fortress of civility to a black and smoldering ruin. The anger that brewed within me, that had been growing like fire licking damp logs, had finally taken hold and all the walls of inhibition were burning.”

Fenn Bancroft thought he would spend the rest of existence hiding away in his wilderness sanctuary of French Lick. But when rumors reach him of a man eating monster wreaking havoc in the hills of France, he convinces the reluctant Gregory that they cannot ignore the threat. The descriptions of mangled bodies left by La Bête have brought back memories of attacks of their own. Could this monster be like them? If so, who else could stop it?

The werewolves enlist two others to join them in answering the call for a hero and leave behind the New World for the Old. Joining hunts led by pompous aristocrats, the four follow local peasants on trails through a forbidding landscape as chilling as a Grimm fairy tale, while the victim's bodies, often children, lie as taunts along the countryside.

As the murders stir the nation’s fear and indignation, the hunt for the beast of the Gévaudan awakens a long dormant desire for flesh in Fenn . . . and he’s not sure how long he can keep it at bay.
