This meticulously organized book delves into Bazel's core architecture, beginning with its fundamental concepts, build graph evaluation, and the sophisticated Skyframe computation engine. Readers will develop a thorough understanding of hermeticity, sandbox isolation, caching strategies, and remote execution, laying a robust foundation for building large-scale, reliable, and reproducible systems.
The journey continues with hands-on insights into authoring effective BUILD and WORKSPACE files, scalable Starlark extension development, and advanced dependency management techniques. From handling polyglot builds and managing complex dependency scenarios to optimizing action graphs and leveraging distributed build farms, the book delivers actionable guidance for scalable performance. Dedicated chapters offer deep dives into testing methodologies, continuous integration, and robust techniques for security, compliance, and maintaining reproducibility across diverse environments.
Whether your goal is seamless migration from legacy systems, incremental adoption, or staying at the forefront of build technology and practices, "Bazel in Depth" equips you with industry-leading patterns, performance optimization strategies, and forward-looking perspectives on Bazel’s role in cloud-native, serverless, and AI-augmented build pipelines.
