Pediatric anesthesia punishes the habits that make adult practice safe. Oxygen reserve is spent in seconds rather than minutes, cardiac output follows heart rate because stroke volume will not rise, and every calculated quantity shifts the moment the weight changes. This textbook is written for the clinician working outside a specialist center: the resident on a first pediatric rotation, the nurse anesthesia student, the generalist whose pediatric list arrives a few times a month.
Twenty-four chapters follow the arc of a real case, from preoperative assessment through induction, airway management, maintenance, and emergence to the small set of crises that demand a rehearsed response.
Inside, you'll find:
- The Adult Reflex Override System, naming 72 moments where an adult instinct misfires in a child, each with the physiologic reason and the decision that replaces it
- Developmental physiology from neonate to adolescent, so you can identify which reserve is thinnest in this patient and predict what fails first
- Airway anatomy, equipment sizing, and technique across the age span, to position and equip the child correctly before laryngoscopy rather than during it
- Induction, vascular access, and intraoperative conduct, with a planned sequence for the struggling child, the failed cannula, and the shared airway
- Fluid, glucose, and transfusion management that avoids dehydration and dilutional hyponatremia on the same plan
- Analgesia, regional foundations, and sedation in remote locations, including why codeine metabolism and sleep-disordered breathing change opioid safety
- Laryngospasm, bronchospasm, malignant hyperthermia, and pediatric resuscitation, taught as graded responses triggered by trend rather than threshold
- The Master Override Atlas, indexing every override by perioperative phase and by clinical trigger for lookup at the point of care
Open it before your next pediatric list.
