Synopsis: In his series The Course of History, Belgian-born, New York-based artist Bart Michiels sought out the most infamous and bloodstained battlefields of Europe. He captures these sites just as they are today--empty fields and pastures, beaches, rolling hills, where time seems to have eradicated any trace of their violent past. As the viewer reads the captions on Michiels' photographs, he or she begins at once to recount the sad history of the place and the moment, reflecting on the heavy consequence of war. Published in an edition of 40 copies, this special limited edition of The Course of History includes a numbered and signed print by Bart Michiels, and is issued in a cloth slipcase. The image of the limited print is titled "Verdun 1916, Le Mort Homme, 2001," depicting a wide, slightly hilly meadow with tall grass, behind a featureless sky.

About the Author: Bart Michiels was born in Diest, Belgium in 1964, grew up on the coastal flatlands of Flanders and studied photography in Brussels. He won The Project Competition (Santa Fe) in 1995 for his series Riverworks; and was a finalist for both the 2006 Santa Fe Prize for Photography and for Le Prix HSBC Pour la Photographie (France) in 2010 for his series The Course of History. His work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the collection of Bank of America, The Tennessee Valley Authority, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City and The Milwaukee Museum of Art, among others. Michiels currently resides and works in New York City.
