Baroque, and later, Rococo architecture dominated all the arts, incorporating in its design painting, sculpture, and stucco decora-tion to achieve an unparalleled visual and plastic richness, whether it was in the service of the Church or for the sumptuous residences of monarchs and wealthy patrons. Beginning with the work of Carlo Maderno, the Baroque in Rome flourished rapidly to achieve the height of its expression in the dramatic churches of Bernini, Cartona, Bor-romini. And it was still further developed by Guarini in Turin. The strength of the French classical traditions and the exigencies of a secular monarch and his court gave the French Baroque its more restrained character. The result was a domestic and civil architecture which became the epitome of refinement, elegance, and dignity. The Baroque and Rococo developed relatively late in Austria and Germany due to various political and economic reasons. But this Central European expression was without equal in the integration of all the arts, culminating in a rich synthesis of architecture, sculpture, painting, and stucco decoration. Although the Baroque and Rococo manifested themselves in varying ways in dif-ferent countries, they were uniform in their desire to attain dynamic and spectacular effects. The use of the plastic and spatial elements created an exciting and dramatic style unequaled in any previous or subsequent style. HENRY A.
