Philadelphia: R.L. Barnes, 1856. 24mo hardcover in brown cloth with blind decoration. Gilt title to front board, blind title to rear board. Modern rebacking with matching brown cloth and gilt titling. Unfolds into 26.5 x 37.5 fully hand-tinted map. Reading copy only. Boards moderately sunned. Edgeworn with corners rubbed and spine cloth neatly replaced. Early owner's name inked on front pastedown. Map detached from boards, and separated into many sections, Sections have many tears along joints and is very fragile, but ALL PIECES PRESENT. Map lightly toned with a few small stains, but colors remain vibrant, completed in the decorative style typical of the period. From the library of American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter William Safire. With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish.
