Neuware - 'Bards of the Gael and Gall' is a comprehensive and influential anthology of Irish poetic literature, meticulously translated into English by George Sigerson. This collection serves as a sweeping survey of the poetic traditions of Erinn, spanning from the mythological and heroic eras of the Gael to the later expressions of the Irish people. Sigerson's pioneering work is notable for his effort to preserve the intricate meters and stylistic modes of the original Gaelic verse, allowing the English reader to experience the rhythmic complexity and authentic structure of the ancient forms. The volume includes a wide range of examples, including prehistoric chants, early Christian hymns, and the lyric poetry of the Middle Ages. This edition is enhanced by a memorial preface from the scholar and statesman Douglas Hyde, which adds significant historical and literary context to the collection. 'Bards of the Gael and Gall' remains an essential resource for those interested in Celtic studies, comparative literature, and the preservation of Ireland's rich oral and written traditions.
