Print on Demand. This book traces the history of cooperation among American Baptists for missionary purposes, encompassing efforts for all other aims as well, since Baptists pursue the same basic principles in all their endeavors. The fundamental doctrines driving this movement are individualism, which favors local independence, and a fellowship based on cooperation. The pivotal problem is to maintain the autonomy of a participatory democracy while maximizing efficiency across a wide mission field. This challenge is both theoretical and practical, and the incomplete and inconsistent attempts to reconcile these aims have shaped the course of Baptist missionary collaboration. Researchers of Baptist history and those curious about the development of religious cooperation will find this study valuable for its insights into a unique approach to spreading religious influence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
