This unique book records the method Pina Bausch developed and used, as seen by one of her close collaborators, Raimund Hoghe, who worked as dramaturg for the company for a decade (1979–1989).
It follows the work from the first day in rehearsals to its premiere, chronicling the process with artistic sensibility – Bausch’s famous questions, the dancers’ responses and Hoghe’s own reflections as the piece develops.
This important document sees its first English language publication, and is succinctly translated from the German by Penny Black. The diary is accompanied by an Introduction and A Portrait by Katalin Trencsényi, following Hoghe’s journey from being a journalist to becoming an internationally acknowledged dancer-choreographer.

About the Author
In 1994 Hoghe produced his first solo for himself, Meinwärts, which together with the subsequent Chambre séparée (1997) and Another Dream (2000) made up a trilogy on the 20th century. Raimund Hoghe's choreographies have been performed in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia, and were awarded with several dance prizes, including the 'Deutscher Produzentenpreis für Choreografie' (2001), the French Prix de la Critique (2006) for Swan Lake, 4 Acts.
In 2008 critics from the ballet-tanz magazine voted him to receive the 'Dancer of the Year' award.
KATALIN TRENCSÉNYI is a London-based dramaturg and researcher. As a freelance dramaturg, Katalin has worked with the National Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre, Deafinitely Theatre, Corali Dance Company, and Company of Angels, among others.
As an associate lecturer Katalin has taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She is the author of Dramaturgy in the Making. A User's Guide for Theatre Practitioners (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2015), co-editor of New Dramaturgy: International Perspectives on Theory and Practice (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2014), and a contributor to The Routledge Companion to Dramaturgy (Routledge, 2014).
PENNY BLACK has translated, adapted or written over forty plays for a variety of theatres such as the Royal Court, the Gate, the National Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, Arcola Theatre as well as venues in America and Australia.
Her translation of Nobel Laureate Elfriede Jelinek's SPORTS PLAY toured the UK during the Olympic year and was chosen as a Cultural Olympic Pop-Up event. From 2006 to 2012 she was the project co-ordinator for theatre, literature and dance at the Goethe-Institut, London. As a dramaturg Penny has worked widely: most significantly with Broadway producer Annette Niemtzow for White Dog productions and with Simon McBurney on Die Zauberfloete for DNO/ENO.
She is on the board of Company of Angels, a member of The Fence, and is the 2015-2017 Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Oxford Brookes. Since 2016 Penny is serving as President of the Dramaturgs Network.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to GreatBookPricesUK, Castle Donington, Derby, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
