Our goal in writing The Bamboo Network was to provide a concise history of economic reform in China, as well as a description of the tremendous long-run potential of the Chinese marketplace. To date, U.S. businesses -- facing significant cultural and political barriers -- have struggled to capitalize on this opportunity. Expatriate Chinese entrepreneurs, however, have been extremely successful in leveraging their extensive network of business and poltical contacts to create enormous business empires.
