Black-and-white illustrations, complete. Introduction and Foreword in front. Errata tipped in back. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light to moderate age toning, occasional smudges, and slight wear to extremities. Covers are very clean and intact except for slight wear to corners and edges, fuzz on back (can likely be removed), and offsetting and fading on front, back, and spine (faded to a brown color). A Very Good copy. An art monograph featuring ten black-and-white illustrations of ten "mo-tsu" (black-ink bamboo paintings) originally made by the Chinese prince-painter, Wang Tseng-tsu, from 1701-1703 and related poems, interpretative text and art analysis by Katherine M. Ball, and other materials. While Wang's artworks are the focus of this book, there is a variety of other materials provided herein including a dedication (originally written in 1706) by Lu-chi Yung to the late Wang. The following are the contents: "Bamboo Picturesque (Poem)," "Bamboo Symbolic (Poem)," "Translation of the Memorial" (English translation of the memorial written by Wang's tutor and friend, Lu-chi Yung, who attests to the kind and noble spirit of Wang and the late Imperial Prince Painter's seeming effortlessness in making his iconic bamboo paintings; facsimile illustration of the original Chinese memorial included), "Canons of Hsieh Ho" (includes six canons or treatises), "The Psychology of Graphic Arts" (by Ball), and "The Analysis of the Illustrations" (by Ball). Also included are a few excerpts from writings of Chinese artists and authors about bamboo as a theme and a brief history of depicting bamboo in art and writing in China. Back colophon: "500 copies of this book have been printed at The Gillick Press, Berkeley, California, in the month of October, 1944. This is copy number 112, [signed] Katherine M. Ball.".…
