First published in 1967, when local history was still viewed as parochial or less important than national history, Evans's work is now considered pioneering. WILLIAM McKEE EVANS is a professor of history emeritus at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He is also the author of To Die Game: The Story of the Lowry Band, Indian Guerillas of Reconstruction.
