Print on Demand. This book details the significant study conducted by the U.S. Forest Service into the feasibility of a novel logging method in the environmentally sensitive Idaho Batholith region. The book delves into the environmental concerns associated with traditional logging and explores the use of a balloon logging system as an alternative approach. The experiment conducted by the Forest Service, in partnership with Boise Cascade Corporation, demonstrated that balloon logging could be environmentally advantageous compared to conventional methods. The reduced road network required for balloon logging minimizes disturbances to the terrain, protecting soil, water resources, and sensitive habitats. Beyond its environmental benefits, the book also examines the physical capabilities and economic viability of balloon logging in the Idaho Batholith. It provides insights into the challenges of logging in steep and rugged terrain, including the impact of weather and logistical constraints on productivity and costs. The detailed analysis of production data and costs presented in this book offers valuable information for professionals and decision-makers involved in forest management. It contributes to a broader understanding of environmentally sustainable logging practices and the potential of innovative techniques in preserving natural ecosystems while meeting timber harvesting needs. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Experience has shown that road networks needed for conventional logging can lead to severe erosion in the Idaho Batholith. In an attempt to develop an environmentally acceptable logging system, in 1971the Forest Service, usda, in cooperation with Boise Cascade Corporation, began an experiment with balloon logging in Anderson Creek near Garden Valley, Idaho, on the Boise National Forest.
The balloon logging system resulted in far less environmental impact on the land as compared to conventional logging methods. This conclusion is based on observations both shortly after the area was logged and after several years had passed.
