The book "From Bakelite to Composite: Design in New Materials" aims to change this and presents the history of the composites, the types, the processing techniques and the applications in design and styling of all kinds of consumption goods. More than 200 illustrations show how strong, durable and light composites are, how they get their forms and who does this. The texts are thoroughly illustrated with recent, concrete examples of the world of design furniture, lighting, sports, car, industry, but also art: Panamarenko, Tony Gragg, Niki de Saint-Phalle. This book is in co-operation with the Design Museum, Ghent.

Composietmaterialen vind je werkelijk overal terug: denken we slechts aan ski’s, surfplanken, motorhelmen, kano’s, racefietsen… Maar ook de Formule 1-wereld, de auto- en motorindustrie in het algemeen, de ruimtevaart en vliegtuigbouw, de bouwnijverheid, het leger en de medische wereld kunnen niet zonder.
Het ontstaan en de ontwikkeling van composietmaterialen zijn echter nauwelijks bekend. Het boek Design in new materials wil hieraan verhelpen en presenteert de geschiedenis van de composieten, de soorten, de verwerkingstechnieken en de toepassingen in design en vormgeving van allerlei consumptiegoederen. Meer dan 200 illustraties maken duidelijk hoe sterk, duurzaam en licht composieten zijn, hoe ze vorm krijgen en wie ze die vorm geeft.
De teksten in dit unieke boek werden geschreven door een team van professoren van de universiteiten van Delft (NL), Leuven (B), Liverpool (GB) en Napels (I). Een en ander wordt zeer uitvoerig geïllustreerd met recente, concrete voorbeelden uit de wereld van het designmeubel, de verlichting, de sport, de auto, de industrie, maar ook de kunst: Panamarenko, Tony Gragg, Niki de Saint-Phalle…
