About this Item
A brochure primarily for foreign investors to promote Bahrain's post-oil economy. Original colour illustrated wraps in landscape format 24x17cm. Produced and designed by ArabConsult and printed by Oriental Press for the Ministry of Information. 32, (1)pp illustrated with colour photos throughout, and 2 b/w maps. Very good. Scarce (OCLC 5946762). It reveals a dynamic, modern country rich with opportunity, containing information on geography, Government, international trade, commerce and industry, communications, health, education, housing, shopping and leisure. Major businesses mentioned include the Bahrain National Oil Company, Aluminium Bahrain and BALEXCO, the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (jointly owned by Bahrain and 6 other OAPEC countries), banking with the Bahrain Monetary Agency promoting new investment banks, and the Bahrain Fishing Company. Noting that oil reserves are unlikely to last much beyond 2000, it highlights measures to develop the Island as a regional hub and service centre with industrial zones at Mina Sulman and Sitra; cold storage and distribution; major harbour developments; the airport; projected causeway to Saudi Arabia; housing development at Isa Town (inaugurated in 1968, due to complete in 1981). The island boasts a cosmopolitan population, with a quarter of residents from other Middle Eastern countries, Asia and Europe. The cover photo highlights these developments, constrasting an old windtower with an aerial view of the modern city. Other photos show the diversity of Bahrain and its people. The maps show the islands (with settlements, oil installations, the causeway to Sitra etc), and Bahrain's position in the Gulf. Seller Inventory # 4638
