Synopsis
In this illustrated story of the "bad girls" of the Hollywood cinema, Lottie Da and Jan Alexander explore the lives and careers of those famous actresses who have played the roles of harlots, vamps, courtesans, streetwalkers, gangsters' molls, cheating wives and Park Avenue call girls; from the early days of the silent cinema to the present day. It looks at why "bad girl" character types were taken up by Hollywood to become big box office hits and also traces the changing fashion in the "fallen woman" of the cinema through Depression, war, censorship and sexual revolution, and asks whether the private lives of the stars and starlets, from Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, Sigourney Weaver and Jodie Foster, have mirrored those of the bad girls they have acted out on the screen. The authors use interviews of stars past and present, and stills - many of which have never been published - to give a tribute to Hollywood's fallen angels.
